Sean Thornton (John Wayne), a retired American boxer, has returned from America to reclaim his homestead and escape his past.
Sean's attention is caught by a beautiful maiden. Mary Kate Danaher (Maureen O’Hara), who is moving a flock trough a field. Sean falls head over heels for Mary Kate, but she is the younger sister of ill-tempered "Red" Will Danaher (Victor McLaglen) who he beat to the purchase of the cottage he now calls home.
The riotous relationship that forms between Sean and Mary Kate, is punctuated by Will's belligerent attempts to keep them apart.
