Be daring, be different, be impractical! My ambition was to demonstrate I was not just an ordinary person
Following five star reviews in Edinburgh, Cecil Beaton’s Diaries has its New York premiere as part of Brits Off Broadway, prior to a UK tour and London run.
For the first time, the diaries of Sir Cecil Beaton come to the stage, to accompany his most iconic images. Beaton’s photographs showed his versatility; his diaries exposed the cost. Even his designs for My Fair Lady never stopped his doubts. And his passion for Greta Garbo found fulfilment only in his writing.
Blisteringly funny, with appearances ranging from Elizabeth Taylor to Truman Capote, the diaries paint a self-portrait of the 20th century’s most compelling dandy.
Performed by Richard Stirling, whose recent TV credits include Bridgerton and The Crown.
New York Reviews
Stirling does a superlative job of milking Beaton's diaries for all of their venom.
- Talkin’ Broadway
Stirling dexterously juggles the façade of the flamboyant eccentric and the truth of the man behind it, in languid, extravagant gesture and brief lightning flashes of anger.
- The Front Row Center
It is a perfect match of actor and the historical figure he is portraying – and between Stirling and Beaton you have two excellent storytellers.
This marvellous solo show is aptly entertaining and informative.
Cecil Beaton’s Diaries is an exceptionally literate and amusing solo performance.
Stirling is spot on... both shocking and hilarious... deeply moving
